A charrette is an intensive planning session where citizens, designers and others collaborate on a vision for development. It provides a forum for ideas and offers the unique advantage of giving immediate feedback to the designers. More importantly, it allows everyone who participates to be a mutual author of the plan.
The charrette focuses community input over a short period of time, through the hands-on effort of participants representing the full spectrum of interests.
We then use the results to evolve the vision and plan over the following days in an on-site planning studio. Throughout the week the community’s goals for each focus areas of the plan are pursued while ideas and scenarios are tested. The community is invited into the studio to offer continual feedback on the work being produced.
Through these in-depth Charrettes, participants come to care more about the plan– they see their ideas as they are refined and become part of a more finalized vision. As a result of the educational value of this approach, citizens become familiar with the tools of good urban design and gain an appreciation of the importance of long-range thinking.
Our team also conducts additional community meetings and interviews both during the Pre-Charrette or Post-Charrette periods. We also have experience using online forums to continue the conversation throughout the project.
Participating in the Charrette will give you a chance to express your vision for the future of Downtown Missoula. Your participation will make the difference between a good plan and a great one.
